Vestax MR66
The Vestax MR66 is a 6 track multitrack recorder manufactured in the late 1980s through the early 1990s that uses high bias cassettes as its storage medium. It is unique as it features a built-in patchbay for easy and creative routing of audio signals. It originally retailed for 1,399 USD.〔Electronic Musician, August 1990〕 Despite its high-quality of build and professional sound, the MR66 has remained widely under-appreciated as a multitrack cassette recorder. Its major competition at the time includes the TASCAM 238/238S which offers 8 tracks on cassette at about the same price (without a patchbay). The TASCAM 238 (with DBX) and 238S (with Dolby S) both have an excellent reputation for good quality sound. A similar TOA 8 track competitor did not fare as well. Units in the portastudio format (with mixing board) that also offer 8 tracks on cassette include the TASCAM 688, 488, 488 mkII and Yamaha MT8X. All of these units have not been manufactured in several years however TASCAM still services and supports all of their products. Zaza Energy recorded their record ''Walt'' on an MR66. ==References==
